Windows 8.1 release date announced by Microsoft

The release date of Microsoft Windows 8.1 has been announced to be October 18 at 12:00 am in New Zealand time (4:00 am October 17 in Redmond, Microsoft's home town). The release of Windows 8.1 is thus about 1 year after the initial release of Windows 8 which was released on October 26, 2012.

It is expected that following the official release, Windows 8.1 will automatically be rolled out worldwide, and users of Windows 8 will be offered the option to update to Windows 8.1 free of charge through the Windows Store.

Windows 8.1 comes with several significant changes to the user interface and some very visible and immediately clear changes include the option to boot to desktop and the returning start menu.

Time will tell if Windows 8.1 can salvage some of the reputation of the Windows 8 series in general. But personally I am afraid that the reputation of Windows 8 and Windows RT has been forever damaged and will be difficult to rebuild, in particular in these days where consumers put more money into smartphones and tablets than new computers.
